Summer K.A.M.P. Successes!

A First Time for Everything

What a treat it was to host our first year of afternoon enrichment and Summer K.A.M.P.  The majority of our kids during the summer break were from families who have never experienced our program and the kids came ready to work hard!  Daily, we built sets, wrote scripts, filmed, edited, composed scores and sound effects, produced voice-overs, applied special effects or just dreamed a little.  Starting at the beginning of each week with nothing, and ending with some amazing little ideas coming to life was fantastic.  We are thankful for the positive feedback and look forward to serving you all in the Fall!

Filmmaking K.A.M.P. was a SUCCESS!

Filmmaking Summer K.A.M.P. Week 2

A Success!  In our first Filmmaking Summer K.A.M.P. session, the kids wrote the script, conceptualized the visuals, recorded voice-overs, composed music, filmed, added lighting, edited video, created an original song and worked on a score for this movie.  We closed with a Wrap Party at Butter & Cream and some party time at Decatur Rec!

It is important that kids learn how to co-create their world, and not compete for it.  Their natural inclination is to imagine.  It is amazing what can happen when kids are taught how to organize great ideas into tangible creations!  Some great tools, a few guiding principles and LITTLE bit of time, they can do anything!

Renfroe Middle School recently performed their own rendition of “Fiddler On The Roof (Jr.)”.  My family and I attended the premier and loved it!  Emma, our daughter, was in the play and we enjoyed seeing the fruit of her hard work, as were all the other excited family and friends in the building.  The next morning, I saw an email that it was not filmed and that they needed a videographer for the show in the afternoon.  I immediately responded and prepped as much as I could considering the notice 😉  It was filmed with a Panasonic GH4 in 4K through an Olympus M.Zuiko Pro 12-44MM lens.  The sound was recorded using a Rode shotgun mic.  After some discussion on distribution methods, Dhwani and I came up with the idea to make it available for download, asking only for a donation in return.  The proceeds will be split, with half going to Renfroe Middle School programs and the other half going towards our “Build a Studio For Kids” campaign for the Houston House.  I had a discussion recently with CoD School Board Member Lewis Jones and we agreed it would be awesome to utilize kids from the academy to film future productions within the city.  Great idea!
