2018 Mentorship Program Proposal-Marchen Sagen Academy

Project Description

Our mentorship program has a robust curriculum that creates an opportunity for high school students to receive vocational training in the development of digital content and media creation.  The curriculum includes an internship at a local nonprofit as a multi-media specialist and upon completion of the program, we will help identify an opportunity for employment.  Starting in the 11th grade, students will have early exposure to professional knowledge, software and equipment, as well as practical strategies and basic business principles required to be successful as an entrepreneur and independent videographer.  Instruction and hands-on access to drones, video equipment, in-studio lectures, exercises, field trips and time to work on individual projects will be provided and encouraged.

Intimate Class Structure

Our pilot program will host 10 students per semester across three 48 day cycles through the 2018-2019 City of Decatur school year.  There will only be 5 students per day in the program at any given time, allowing us the opportunity to serve the youth in smaller, more personally focused class sizes.  The program sessions will be twice a week, with 5 students focusing on Monday and Wednesday and 5 students on Tuesday and Thursday.  Also, there will be two “Open Play” 4-hour workshops per month to allow students access to the studio and equipment on Saturdays for additional one-on-one development, coaching, guidance and enrichment.

Innovative Learning Environment

Creative students in need typically do not have access to a nurturing and inspiring environment filled with equipment and software to develop and grow their ideas.  Our studio is located in a historic two-story home on the square in Downtown Decatur.  We have a Green Screen Room, class rooms, professional camera equipment and lighting to build sets, film interviews and produce films and stop-motion animation. We host a rehearsal space and Live Room that houses a Hammond M3, electric and acoustic guitars, a bass rig and drum set.  Our Production Studio is the heart of this 112 year old gem.  Daily, the space is utilized to record voice-overs, teach electronic music production and beat making, film scoring, audio recording and mixing with the latest hardware and software including DJI Drones, Final Cut Pro X, Logic Pro Audio, Mac Pro, an Apollo Twin and Satellite QUAD, Universal Audio software, Photoshop and Protools.

Outcome

The students who complete this program will gain a love for the arts and technology that they may never have known possible.  They will have gained confidence to pursue a career opportunity in a highly sought after discipline.  The curriculum will also instill communication and entrepreneurial skills so that they can be effective in presenting proposals, negotiation and defining their brand. The value of giving back through service will also be deeply engrained in each of the students so that they too can be a mentor one day to complete the cycle.  Students will also gain hands on experience as an intern, developing web content and videos for their sponsor organizations.  We will track progress and define key KPIs throughout the program.  However, we believe the true measure of success will be when one of our graduates can return and teach a session.
